Celebrating ASLM Board Member Dr Jenny Brockis’ New Book: The Natural Advantage

We’re excited to share the release of The Natural Advantage, the latest book by ASLM Board Member Dr Jenny Brockis! In this insightful guide, Dr Brockis (pictured above at the book launch in Perth with other WA ASLM Members) delves into how spending more time outdoors can reduce stress, improve overall health, and foster stronger social connections – three key pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. If you’ve been feeling the pressures of modern life, The Natural Advantage offers a refreshing, nature-based approach to reclaiming your wellbeing.

How Time in Nature Benefits Your Health and Wellbeing

In The Natural Advantage, Dr Brockis shows how reconnecting with nature is deeply aligned with the core principles of Lifestyle Medicine. Time spent outdoors promotes mental and physical wellbeing by lowering stress, preventing burnout, and enhancing mood – critical components of maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Nature-based activities, such as walking, hiking, or even practicing mindfulness outdoors, support the pillars of stress management, physical activity, and mental wellbeing, which are fundamental to Lifestyle Medicine.

Practical Tips for Incorporating Nature into Your Lifestyle

While The Natural Advantage offers a range of strategies to help you connect with nature, here’s a preview: from taking mindful walks in a local park to bringing elements of nature into your living space, there are simple, effective ways to enhance your lifestyle through more time outdoors. These small changes align with the healthy environment pillar of Lifestyle Medicine, supporting overall health and happiness.

A Must-Read for Our Nature-Deficient Lives

As our lives become busier and more technology-driven, many of us are experiencing what Dr Brockis describes as “nature deficit,” leading to increased stress, reduced wellbeing, and burnout. In line with Lifestyle Medicine’s holistic approach, Dr Brockis argues that reconnecting with the natural world is essential for physical and mental health – not just a luxury. Nature, after all, is a vital tool in managing lifestyle-related diseases and promoting long-term wellbeing.

About the Book

The Natural Advantage provides practical, evidence-based strategies grounded in Lifestyle Medicine to help you restore your health through the power of nature. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just starting to explore how the outdoors can enhance your wellbeing, this book is a must-read.
