Benita is the Communications Lead for ASLM. Benita’s background is in event management, print advertising production, administration, marketing, and the coordination of surgical clinical examinations. She has a Bachelor of Creative Industries, majoring in Communication Design, and a Diploma of Visual Arts. Her role encompasses communications, administrative support, meetings, and events. Benita is interested in health and wellbeing, and behaviour change, and is very excited to be contributing to the Lifestyle Medicine movement.

Ruth is a NZ Registered Physiotherapist, with over 20 years’ experience, more than half of which has been in Mental Health contexts, including 6 years as Clinical Leader Physiotherapy, Specialist Mental Health Services, CDHB. During this time she played a key role in initiatives to embed the importance of physical health in mental health, along with wellbeing and lifestyle practices both as a programme framework and therapy interventions.
Ruth’s passion for a neurobiological model of mental health (with non-medication and lifestyle approaches), ongoing learning and educating others is evident in the 40+ presentations to stakeholders such as clinical staff, students and educators on a range of topics, within the organisation, across sector and nationally. She also contributed to several webpages on ‘Healthpathways’ and developed resources for clients, now available on https://www.healthinfo.org.nz/
Ruth has a keen interest in and experience with complex and neurodevelopmental trauma, work with children, adolescents and their families, along with other mental health conditions. Her approach includes working with dysregulated physiology, arousal states, sensorimotor processing, as well as (chronic) pain and the bidirectional interactions with emotion, mood, implicit memory, and behaviours.
In 2021 Ruth established a mental health physiotherapy private practice under the name gifted by tangata whenua – Te Whakamana Oranga (empowering/enabling wellbeing) – embodying her mahi/work with individuals living with mental health conditions as well as resourcing other clinicians.
Ruth also loves exploring the natural beauty of NZ. With a background in music she enjoys singing and playing a number of instruments, listening to and incorporating music into physiotherapy interventions as appropriate.

Dr Manger is a General Practitioner with a focus on lifestyle medicine and mental health, Senior Medical Officer in the Mental Health Services with Queensland Health, Academic Lead and Senior Lecturer of the postgraduate suite (Master, Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate) in Lifestyle Medicine at James Cook University College of Medicine and Dentistry and GP Training, Ambassador for Equally Well Australia, Vice President of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ASLM), Advisory Group member of the RACGP Shaping a Healthy Australia project, host of The GP Show podcast, and RACGP QLD GP of the Year 2021.
Professor Maximilian de Courten is a Global Public Health expert specializing in the prevention and management of chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and mental health issues. With a wealth of firsthand experience, Professor de Courten has developed, implemented, and analyzed interventions across diverse settings, from clinical trials and community programs to large-scale international government initiatives.
His professional mission is to lead teams in creating and evaluating complex, population-based interventions that holistically address pressing health challenges facing communities and individuals today and in the future.
With over 26 years of experience, Professor de Courten has held leadership roles across research-focused institutions, including governmental research institutes (e.g., the NIH), intergovernmental organizations (e.g., WHO), private research centers, and academia, including the University of Copenhagen, Monash University, Deakin University, and the University of Bern.
His expertise encompasses clinical trials, health services, community-based prevention, workplace mental health promotion, health policy, disease control, and global health education. A prolific researcher with over 160 publications, Professor de Courten has also supervised numerous PhD and Master’s students and has substantial experience teaching, particularly in postgraduate public health courses.
Simon is a psychologist and executive and leadership coach, focused particularly on leaders in healthcare. He is Board Certified in Health Coaching and Lifestyle Medicine and a Professional Certified Coach with ICF. He is on teaching faculty with Wellcoaches School of Coaching and is also an Adjunct Lecturer at Avondale University Lifestyle Medicine & Health Research Centre.
He is a Fellow of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine and is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Romanian Society of Lifestyle Medicine.
Simon is also Director of Coaching for First in Wellness LLC, the mission of which is to improve the health, well-being and resilience of first responders.
In addition, Simon is a Director of the US not-for profit Global Positive Health Institute, which seeks to support healthcare and other organisations by bringing together the disciplines of Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology. He is also a Director of the Australian not-for-profit Practice Excellence Institute which seeks to support health care organisations to provide high quality healthcare to their communities.
Simon consults nationally and internationally in the areas of health coaching, behaviour change, positive psychology and lifestyle medicine. When not working, Simon also loves talking about his other passions as a pilot, barista, gardener and self-taught cook.
Sophie is a fourth year medical student at Monash University who is hugely passionate about health through lifestyle. In 2022, Sophie began working with the ASLM Student Leadership Council, then worked with two other Monash students to form the Monash University Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group (MULMIG). The group now comprises a committee of twelve and reaches many Monash students across healthcare faculties.
Highlights of the MULMIG calendar so far have included the What Is Lifestyle Medicine Launch Event, weekly MULMIG Park Runs, Mindful Mondays, consultation with the Monash Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Science, provision of student resources and collaborations with AMSA and other Monash Student Committees, including in Global Health and General Practice.
Sophie is well known for her love of running and healthy food, and hopes to continue applying what she has learnt through ASLM and Lifestyle Medicine to clinical practice in the future.
Dr Elise Ecker is a dedicated advocate for integrating health promotion into clinical practice, with a focus on enhancing practitioner wellbeing to improve patient outcomes. Serving as the Wellbeing Representative for the 2024 PMCWA JMO Forum and Vice President of her JMO society, Dr Ecker actively promotes the vital link between clinician wellness and effective care. Known for her innovative approach and impactful initiatives, she inspires those around her and drives positive change in the field of Lifestyle Medicine. Her leadership extends beyond her primary roles, as she contributes to gut microbiome research and volunteers with Ambulance Wish WA to support palliative care. Dr Ecker’s commitment to holistic health and her warm, engaging presence make a meaningful impact on her colleagues, the next generation of healthcare providers, and the wider community.
Dr Eileen Gourley is a GP who has worked in mainstream practice in regional Victoria and Cairns, Queensland for more than 20 years, now inspired by Lifestyle Medicine to engage in further studies and application of Lifestyle Medicine including in Aboriginal healthcare.

Prof Garry Egger is known around the world as one of the pioneers of Lifestyle Medicine. He is a Professor of Health and Human Sciences at Southern Cross University and an advisor to the World Health Organisation and several Government and corporate bodies in chronic disease prevention. He has qualifications in behavioural biology and epidemiology. He has worked in public, corporate and clinical health for over four decades. He is the author of 30 books (including five texts), over 160 peer-reviewed scientific and research articles and numerous popular media articles on health and fitness.
Prof Egger started training programs for Fitness Leaders in Australia in 1982, and then in the 1990s, he initiated GutBusters, a well known men’s ‘waist loss’ program, the first of its kind in the world. Garry was one of the founders of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine in 2008 and the author of an internationally acknowledged Lifestyle Medicine textbook published around the same time. He runs training programs in Lifestyle Medicine for doctors and allied health professionals around Australia and the Pacific. He recently received an Australia Medal for his services to medical education and health promotion. His recent interests and publications concern the link between obesity, climate change and economic growth.
