Drs Sam Manger and Hung The Nguyen win RACGP GP of the Year in QLD and VIC for 2021

ASLM is very happy to announce that our President Dr Sam Manger and Fellow Dr Hung The Nguyen have been awarded the RACGP GP of the Year 2021 in Queensland and Victoria respectively. These awards are a fantastic recognition of their hard work and dedication to improving the health of the communities they work with.

The awards were judged on the following areas:

How can we implement more “green time,” and what does this do for us?

  • Commitment to General Practice and Service to the Public
  • Involvement in General Practice Teaching and Training
  • Continuing Professional Development

Both Dr Manger and Dr Nguyen acknowledged the work of their fellow GPs and the wider Primary Care community who have faced a uniquely challenging year and have provided such important support to their patients. The RACGP will be announcing the national winner at their 2021 Conference in late November with the winner being chosen from a pool of five 2021 state winners.

Dr Manger understands deeply that general practice is at the centre of good healthcare, it is a meeting point for every health discipline and the anchor point for patients. As President of ASLM he is passionate about whole of person and multidisciplinary care and is dedicated to working with his patients to understand how best to address lifestyle and social/environmental determinants of health.

Dr Manger said, “It is honour, though there are so many great GPs that I would consider my mentors and teachers, so this one is for all of us.”

Dr Manger has been inspired by his many GP role models during his medical training who have shown themselves to be dynamic, caring and passionate professionals. In the same way that Dr Manger was inspired he hopes to empower the next generation of GPs through his commitment to medical education via JCU GP training, via the GP Show podcast and website thegpshow.com, as an ambassador for Equally Well and his work in mental health and lifestyle medicine in multiple settings throughout Australia.

Dr Nguyen has worked extensively as a GP and Medical and Cultural Educator throughout the Northern Territory and Victoria. He currently works as a GP at Bunurong Health Service, Dandenong, Victoria – an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service where he is a GP Supervisor for Eastern Victoria General Practice Training.

Dr Nguyen has a long-term commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and multicultural health. Medical and cultural education is his number one passion as it allows him to make a greater impact on people’s lives through teaching and learning. Dr Nguyen has worked in a variety of rural communities in Australia and has been inspired by understanding the application of medicine in developing countries.

Dr Nguyen commented, “To me, in recognising my work, the RACGP GP of the Year (Vic) is a recognition of all the hard work and dedication of all GPs trying to make a difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD communities through culturally competent and quality evidence based primary care. I take my hat off to them all. The award is one of representation and I am glad I can represent this group of fine doctors in our community.”

Stephen Penman, Executive Director of ASLM said, “We would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2021 RACGP Awards. We are very happy to see two ASLM members and experienced GPs selected for Queensland and Victoria. Both Dr Hung Nguyen and Dr Sam Manger are strong advocates for Lifestyle Medicine and understand it’s importance in dealing with the chronic disease and mental health challenges in Australia today.”
