Workshop overview

In this online workshop, you will learn how to conduct Shared Medical Appointments to become an ASLM Certified SMA Practitioner or Facilitator. For more information on Shared Medical Appointments, visit the Shared Medical Appointments page.

Who is this workshop for?

• Doctors and allied health practitioners wanting to learn how to facilitate and deliver Shared Medical Appointments.
• Other practitioners and staff in the practice, especially the practice manager and nurses, to ensure that everyone understands the protocol and is able to explain and promote it to patients.
• Health professionals enrolled in the ASLM Fellowship. This workshop will earn candidates 60 points towards the Fellowship.

• Understanding and developing roles in the SMA (by simulated SMA)

What is the difference between an online workshop and an online course?

• The main difference is that the videos were filmed at a previous face to face workshop, so it is like attending that workshop as an observer with access to all the same workshop materials. Otherwise, it is similar to an online course.
• In the case of this online workshop, we have provided multiple sets of videos recorded at different workshops and webinars and new SMA resources will be added as they are developed, making it a great resource for anyone developing their use of SMAs.

Learning outcomes:

1. Describe the rationale for SMAs and the role of processes such as SMAs in chronic disease prevention, management and treatment.
2. Identify considerations as to the appropriateness of the SMA format for particular condition areas and patient populations.
3. Describe the roles and requirements of an SMA, specifically the roles of the GP, the facilitator and the practice nurse or ancillary staff.
4. Identify the benefits of the SMA format as reported in the medical literature, particularly in relation to patient engagement and practitioner satisfaction.
5. Formulate a plan for the delivery of SMAs in practice and identify the processes required to support patient safety and outcomes.
